What is online powerlifting coaching and how does it work?

Online coaching initially involved typing up a program and sending it out to the client to get started. Now it has evolved beyond distributing a program, and many coaches deliver great service online.

Online coaching is just as effective as in-person training at providing change when done right. We have played with many different approaches and found a high-contact model with an assigned coach the best way.

We provide a program that is adjusted as needed and changes every 3-5 weeks, depending on the training phase. This is done via the TrainHeroic app, and there is an extensive library where we explain every exercise in your program in detail.

Additionally, our coaches use the OnForm app to provide a video review of your lifts before your next training session to ensure you can make those changes and confidently implement them. This is like having a coach with you, but on a flexible schedule that allows you to train when you feel like it.

We understand the face-to-face element is important, so you get weekly 15-minute check-up calls with your coach where you can clarify things and get some time to talk.

This is a far cry from where online coaching used to be, and we believe for those with some lifting experience, this can take training to a whole new level than ever before.

How could online coaching benefit me?

Well, you might be thinking, “I’m already great. I don’t need help.” Unfortunately, this misconception is common and leaves gains on the table. Even the greatest lifters in the sport, both past and present, do have coaches. They may even have two – one for lifting and one for nutrition.

A coach will help to plan and quarterback your training program, improve your skills as a lifter, provide support on meet day and be the guide to getting you to the next level.

We have worked with many lifters, ranging from completely new to seasoned. We can confidently say that all of them have found a benefit to having a coach.

Coaches can find the weak areas and the gaps in your training and help you fill them and reach levels you didn’t believe were possible. Whether you are looking to compete or reach a new level of strength, having a coach is a no-brainer. Without one, you are just wasting time sitting there and thinking about things.

What equipment will I need?

All our local lifters are training with us at Mississauga’s premier powerlifting gym, Forge Performance and Fitness, which is fully stocked with all the gear you would ever want to train for serious powerlifting.

For those not as fortunate to be close to Mississauga and Forge, you will need to train for powerlifting properly and have access to a gym that has the following at minimum:

• Power rack
• A power bar from Rogue or of similar calibre
• Steel plates

The following are machines we feel are essential to powerlifting:

• GHR (Glute Ham Raise)
• Rev Hyper
• Belt Squat
• Lat pulldown
• Cable row
• Leg curl
• Back extension

And lastly, the nice to have but not required:

• Competition plates
• Combo racks

What is the best online program?

Many people claim to have the best online program or template. However, the reality of it is that the best program for you is the one that you will do and be able to follow. What this means is, will prescribed lifts and frequency fit into your life? Does the program account for your specific body type, movement capabilities and strength levels? Few coaching services can claim and back this level of personalized programming,
